About
Rab
|
On the western coast of the island of Rab lies the town and harbor of the same name,
with a long and rich history. From the 5th c., when it became the see, Rab (Arba) was the
center of numerous well-organized local administrations, both Roman and all future
governments. Proof of this are numerous preserved documents, the town statute from the
14th c. being the most important one. The old town nucleus is a true collection of notable
buildings in different styles ranging from the 10th c. onwards. The beautiful town park
Komrčar from the turn of the century reflects the long tourist tradition of Rab, as does
the public beach and Imperial Hotel in the town center which is nearly a century old.
Favorable climate and charming old town are prerequisites for a long tourist season
(May-October). Apart from the lovely beaches that can be reached by regular boat service
from the pier, there is a whole range of sports activities; swimming, water-skiing,
spear-fishing, sailing, cycling, tennis, mini-golf, boccie, bowling, walks in the pine
woods... A large number of restaurants and taverns famous for their rich gastronomic
tradition and quality will satisfy even the most demanding gourmets. Entertainment
programs are organized on open-air terraces, discotheques and flood-lit promenades.
A special tourist attraction and cultural event are the knightly games of Rab that date
from 1364 (revived in 1995) and are a reminder of the knightly defence of the town in the
distant past. A specific part of this event is the medieval crossbow that takes place
twice a year (May 9 and July 27). Another interesting sight is Rab's open-air gallery
stretching along the narrow streets of the old town, where works by Croatian and foreign
artists are exhibited.
