About
Opatija
|
Opatija was named after the Benedictine abbey (opatija) of St. Jacob (1449).
Tourism started to develop in Opatija in the mid-19th c. with the construction of Villa
Angiolina, while its flourishing began with the building of a large number of hotels,
villas, summer houses, sanatoriums and public beaches, promenades and parks. Thanks to its
mild climate and lovely surroundings, Opatija was proclaimed the first climatic health
resort on the Adriatic Coast in 1889, and so attracted many notable people of that time.
Various watersports are offered at the public beaches of Opatija (windsurfing, diving,
water-skiing, para-sailing, jet-ski). For lovers of pleasant walks there is the 12 km long
seaside promenade (Volosko-Opatija-Lovran), as well as hiking trails towards Mt. Učka.
Opatija can boast of a rich gastronomic offer. Numerous tennis courts, swimming pools,
hotels with parks, terraces with dancing music, restaurants and bars are ideal places to
relax. Or one can choose the open-air movies, entertainment programs in nightclubs, as
well as open-air performances.
Events: Carnival (January/February), International Sailing Regatta (May),
Opatija Cup (November), cultural events at the Opatija Summer Stage (May-August), Galiola
Regatta (September).
