Region: South Adriatic | Charts: 188 and 1S90 show the cleared channel through the off-lying minefield. The cleared channel, used by commercial shipping, starts from position 40°2S'.6N l9°03'E and proceeds for lOM in the direction of 088°. From position 40°2S'.8N 19°l6'E, the channel direction changes to 062° for 2.2M, then 090° for l.SM, followed by 131° for l .SM, and finally 081° for SM. The channel terminates in the roadstead off Vlore. The entrance to the port is marked by Fl.R and Fl(2)G on the ends of the piers. Background lighting makes it difficult to locate the R light, but the G light is easier to identify. The channel, which is 1 mile wide, passes to the N of Kepi i Gjuhezes and Kepi Gallovecit and to the S of the island, Ishulli i Sazanit. Keep at least 1 mile off Ishulli i Sazanit, which is a prohibited area. To approach within 1 mile of the W side of the bay Gjiri i Vlores, is prohibited. The headland, Kepi i Treporteve, which marks the N entrance to the bay of Vlore consists of earth and rocks, with a rocky shoal extending nearly half a mile in a S direction from the headland. 40°26"5N 19°29"6E Charts 188 (passage chart), 1590 (plan) The harbour of Vlore, Albania's second largest port, is situated on the E side of a large gulf. It is a fishing port and oil terminal. Yachts have to report to the authorities at Vlore before continuing to the new marina. Unfortunately the condition of the piers at Vlore makes them unsuitable for yachts to lie alongside, particularly in any onshore wind or swell or overnight. Shelter is poor except in winds from N to SE. The new marina about 6 miles from Vlore at Orikum, in the S part of the bay, is sheltered and safe for yachts. The approach to Vlore was protected by an extensive minefield during the Second World War. A cleared channel, marked on the chart, crosses the minefield. The minefield is no longer considered a danger to surface navigation, but anchoring, fishing and other submarine activities are considered to be potentially dangerous. There is an oil pipeline to Vlore so look out for oil tankers when in this area.

Berth

Contact the harbourmaster on VHF Ch lS or 16 for instructions on where to berth. There are four piers at Skele 1 Vlore (4.SM SE of Kepi i Treporteve). Anchor near these piers, or tie alongside, unless directed otherwise. This area is exposed to winds and swell from the NW. There is a small harbour at Treporteve approximately l.Smiles SE of Kepi i Treporteve, where it is considered safe to leave a boat. However, this is a small polluted fishing port, with no facilities. It is some distance from Vlore, along an unmade road.
