MK 25. lmray M26 Suourad, a small village and harbour, lies on the SE coast of Otok Sipan, with the small island of Ruda lying just half a mile off the harbour. There are a Suourad lies at the head of the bay with a conspicuous tower in the centre of the village. Suourad on Otok Sipan is an attractive village

Berth

If space and your draught allow tie up bow/stern-to tucked inside the harbour. It may be possible to berth on the village side of the new car ferry jetty, but space here is often taken up by local fishing and tripper boats. Anchor Anchor to the W of the above-water rocks where you will be out of the way of the ferry. Anchor in Sm. The bottom here is sand.

Shelter

Good shelter from SW through W to N. The shelter is poor from other directions.

Facilities

Two shops. Locally made wine, cheese and ham, and fresh fish can be bought in the village. Restaurant. None. Uvala Kosmec

History

The tower in the village was built in 1577 next to a fortified house (1539) and was to protect the inhabitants from pirate attacks. There is another fortified house nearGby. Suourad was the site of one of the Dubrovnik shipyards, but there is no longer any shipbuilding activity here. The villagers are mainly dependent on agriculture and fishing. OTOK JAKLJAN The island of Jakljan is separated from Sipan by a narrow strait, Prolaz Harpoti. There are two small inlets on Jakljan in Prolaz Harpoti where it is possible to anchor, perhaps for swimming or lunch. The main anchorage on Otok Jakljan is however at Uvala Kosmec on the north-facing coast. The island has a holiday centre on it, but no permanent settlement. The olive groves on the island are tended by people living in Sipanska Luka. number of rocks in the bay. Suourad is a quiet and attractive little place. A car ferry calls here.

Approach

0. Ruda, which lies on the N side of the Lopudska Vrata, helps locate the entrance to Suourad. Approaching Suourad from the S note that there is a shallow patch with J.5m over it extending 2 cables S and SE from Rt Butor, the headland at the S entrance to Suourad bay. Inside the bay, keep closer to the S side to avoid rocks on the N side. The village of These anchorages are sheltered from the N and NW. Swell from SW, S and SE enters these coves and makes them dangerous.
