44°42'-4N 14°52'.1 E Charts BA 202, MK 9, lmray M25, M24 Uvala Mifojak lies on the S coast of Otok Rab, protected from S by a small island. The cove has been developed as a car ferry terminal. In the summer, three ferries ply between Uvala Mifojak and Jablanac on the mainland coast. Unfortunately, these developments have spoilt what would otherwise be a superb anchorage. Shelter is available here if overtaken by the bora, but the cove is otherwise not recommended. Beware of Pl. Glavina (Fl(2)10s7m4M), which lies 4 cables S of Uvala Mifojak. Barbatski Kanai There are a number of bays within the Barbatski Kanai, which runs between Otok Rab and Otok Dolin. These bays provide pleasant lunchtime anchorages, although those nearer to Rab town are crowded with moorings. Some of the bays are quayed. Note that one of the bays, near the centre of this channel, has an isolated rock within it. Otok Sv. Grgur, Otok Goli and Otok Prvic These three islands lie N of Otok Rab. During the period of communist rule, Otok Grgur and Otok Goli were prohibited areas. They both had prison camps on them. The prison camp on Otok Goli was particularly notorious for its harsh regime. There is a bay on the NW side of Otok Grgur, where it is possible to anchor if overtaken by a bora. Beware of the rock off the S shore of the bay. The anchorage here is sheltered from NE through E to S. There are no places offering shelter around Otok Prvic. 3.,4 Croatia Senj to the border with Slovenia Restricted areas Various restrictions apply to certain parts of the area covered by this chapter. The Brioni Islands The Brioni Islands have been designated a National Park and access is as a result restricted. Navigation and anchoring in an area to the W of the islands are prohibited. The prohibited area falls within the confines defined below: Cape Vrbanj (Barban)-Cape Kadulja, Cape Kadulja-islet of Supinic, Cape Supinic-Point A (44°54'.8N l3°42'.2E), Point A-Point B (44°52'.6N 13°45'.1E) Point B-Point C (44°53'.2N 13°46'.0E Point C-Cape Kamik. and The SE part of the Brioni islands, within the line from Cape Kavran to Cape Kozlac. Navigation is permitted within the Fafanski Kanai, the channel between the islands and the mainland coast. Landing on the islands is strictly regulated. Visiting yachts are only allowed to moor in the harbour on Otok Veli Brijun, but the harbour dues are so expensive that this is a privilege that can only be afforded by the very rich. Limski Kanal Yachts are not permitted to enter the Limski Kanai, a long fjord on the W coast of !stria. It is an area of outstanding natural beauty, and in order to protect it and the fish farm at its head, entry is restricted to authorised tripper boats only. Traffic separation lanes A traffic separation scheme is in operation in the Vela Vrata, the narrow channel between the northern end of Otok Cres and the Istrian peninsula. The northern extent of the traffic separation zone is from Rt Starganac on Otok Cres, across to Rt Sip on the Istrian peninsula. The southern extent is from a point 3M southeast of Rt Prestenice on Otok Cres across to a point nearly 3XM south-southwest of Rt Brestova. Vessels travelling north should keep to the east side of the channel, whilst south-going vessels should keep to the west side of the channel. The extent of the traffic separation zone and the directions of traffic flow are shown on the chart. The usual rules for crossing traffic lanes should be observed.

Local Weather Effects

In general, the NE bora and the SE sirocco winds are felt strongly in the area covered by this chapter. They are particularly dangerous in winter, but can on occasion blow strongly even in summer. Bora This NE wind blows particularly strongly m the following places: the bora can blow violently. Sirocco While the sirocco is not to be feared as much as the bora it can still create dangerous conditions. It blows from the E at Senj, down the same valley, which funnels the bora. At Bakar the sirocco creates large waves. Land and sea breezes in this area blow offshore or onshore as a generalisation. Local topography however can change these winds in various places. In Zaljev Rafa for instance the land and sea breezes blow along the channel. Magnetic variation and anomalies
