43°00'.7N 17°162E Charts BA 1574, SC 5767. MK 22. lmray M26 Trpanj is a small and busy holiday town in the summer, overlooked by a ruined hilltop fortress dating from the Middle Ages. It is on the N coast of the Peljefac peninsula, 7YiM from Place (Kardeljevo), with which it is linked by a frequent ferry service. 5.2M southeast of Trpanj is the tiny harbour and hamlet of Crkvice. The harbour is still occasionally used by small coasters coming to collect wine, but it is normally deserted. Crkvice will appeal to people who like small forgotten harbours.

Approach

The buildings of the town, and the breakwater built on either side of an island (on which there is a statue), are easily seen from seaward. If approaching from W note that there is an isolated shallow patch with 3.6m over it 4 cables WNW of the main harbour light. There are no other dangers in the approach. The harbour has a frequent ferry service so beware of ferries leaving the harbour and manoeuvring within it. From seaward a radar/radio aerial on top of the hill immediately behind the harbour helps identify its location. There are a few houses clustered around the harbour. There are no dangers in the immediate approach and no lights.

Lights

The main breakwater light is Fl.R.4s5m4M and the ferry pier has a F.R light on it.

Berth

The best berth is in the SW part of the harbour, where all-round shelter is available. Go bow/stern-to the quay SW of the ferry berth. Alternatively, go stern-to the breakwater, although you will need a dinghy to get ashore. Anchor Anchoring outside of the harbour is not recommended because it is exposed to the bora and the sirocco. Anchor This is not a suitable place in which to anchor because of a cable which lands here.

Shelter

The harbour is open NE, but sheltered from N through W to E. The harbour is sheltered from all directions, although strong NW winds create some surge in the E part of the harbo'ur.

The bay is open and offers little shelter, except from S and SW. The entrance to Trpanj harbour viewed from west. Beware of the ferry when entering (or leaving). The distinctive statue (on the wooded island incorporated into the outer mole) can just be made out above the ferry's bows No public water tap, but if you are desperate for water the tourist information office will let you use their tap to fill containers. Petrol and diesel are available from a filling station on the quay, but the hose does not reach as far as the quayside (which is shallow alongside) and so containers are necessary.
