The city is renowned for the ferocity of the winter bora gales it experiences, and it is not advisable to leave a yacht afloat here over the winter. In the summer months however the bora blows rarely.

Approach

The large commercial port of Trieste has no off-lying dangers, and its approach is well marked and lit. To the SW of the city three isolated breakwaters protect the Baia di Muggia. Another isolated wall lying to the N of the city protects a group of commercial quays. Between these two groups of breakwaters, near the city centre, lies the Porto Doganale. Visiting yachts berth in the Porto Doganale. Within the Porto Doganale, there is a marina, Marina San Giusto, and the Bacino Saccheta, which is used by the local sailing clubs. To locate the Porto Doganale identify the three isolated breakwaters to the SW. The Porto Doganale lies to the NE of the most N of these breakwaters. Useful marks are: a round grey stone tower (a disused lighthouse) to the W of the Porto Doganale; the green cupola of the harbour office on the E quayside; and the large building of the fish market, also with a small tower, located on the quayside between the other two points of identification. Trieste Beware of ferries manoeuvring inside and in the approaches to the Porto Doganale. At night the lighthouse, Faro della Vittoria, which lies approximately lM north of the Porto Doganale is a useful mark.

Lights

As one would expect, numerous lights are exhibited from the various breakwaters and moles in the vicinity of Trieste. Some of these can be difficult to identify because of the bright city lights in the background.
