General

41°17'-2N 16°25"5E Charts BA 186, 1443 Trani, with its distinctive cathedral overlooking the harbour, is one of the most easily recognised harbours on the E coast of Italy. The old town around the harbour is backed by a modern town with most facilities.

Approach

Trani cathedral with its tall belfry overlooks the harbour and is an excellent aid to identification. A long breakwater, protecting the harbour from NW winds, extends in a NE direction from near the cathedral. When entering the harbour give the head of this breakwater a good berth because of underwater ballasting. In the outer part of the harbour, just E of the cathedral, there is a shoal with 1 .4m over it. There are no other dangers in the approach.

Berth

The W part of the inner harbour is used by fishing craft and yachts are not allowed to berth here. Visiting yachts should berth at one of the pontoons on the.SE side of the inner harbour. The pontoons on the E side are run by the sailing club.

Shelter is good from all directions except E. Strong

Officials

The harbourmaster's office is located on the W side of the harbour, near the entrance to the inner basin. The customs office is one block back from the W quay. Police in the town.

Facilities

Water and electricity are laid onto the pontoons. Toilets and bowers. Petrol and diesel from the fuel berth on the NE side of the inner harbour (3m along ide) or from the fuel berth on the upplies. Post Office, banks, ATMs, telephones. Doctors, dentists, hospital, pharmacies. Tourist information office, which has an excellent range of leaflets and maps. Hotels, restaurant , cafe/bars. Railway station, bus service, car hire, taxis. Repairs to hull, engine, sails, electrical and electronic equipment can be undertaken locally. Mobile crane.

Visits

Trani has a number of fine and interesting buildings, but the finest is undoubtedly the 11th-century cathedral with its simple pious atmosphere. It has some frescoes and mosaic in the crypt. Bisceglie
