Ivan, which is not named on the current Admiralty chart, is a bay located lM northwest of Rt Donji where it is possible to anchor in Sm for lunch. The anchorage is exposed and only suitable in calm weather. It is not suited as an overnight anchorage. Ashore there is a hamlet with a campsite and a small cafe. It is a sheltered and peaceful inlet facing W, which only has a few fishermen's houses along its shores. The bathing here is very cold, because of underwater streams. Half a mile NW of Uvala Janska is a wide bay, Uvala Budima, with a shingle beach. It is possible to anchor here in 9m. The bay is exposed to SW, S and SE. The bora also blows strongly here, but does not raise any sea. Doli

Berth

Go bow or stern-to the quay at Siano, or alongside if space is available. Anchor There are several possible anchorages within the inlet. E of Rt Gornji is a narrow inlet, where it is possible to lie with an anchor out astern and a line ashore. E of here, in Uvala Banja, is the best anchorage in a bora, although lines need to be taken ashore for added security. Another possible anchorage is S of Siano near the stream, but note that silt carried down by the stream has created a very shallow patch extending 15 to 20m off the beach. The bottom in both these anchorages is mud, good holding. The bay immediately N of Rt Donji, Uvala Osmine with the large Hotel Osmine has a rocky bottom and is not suitable for anchoring.

Shelter

The inlet is open to SW and any swell from this direction makes Slano quay very uncomfortable, if not dangerous. Shelter from other directions is good. U. Banja offers the best shelter in winds from NE through E to SW. The bora blows strongly here, and in these conditions it is advisable to take a line ashore. The bay is open W, and some swell from SW enters.

History

Siano was inhabited from the earliest times, as is indicated by Illyrian burial mounds and the remains of a Roman fortress found in the area. Slano came under the control of Dubrovnik in 1399, and became the seat of a count. Up until 1991, the count's palace could still be seen in Slano and the 18th-century summer palace of the Ohmucevi, family was an example of the type of summer residence favoured by the wealthy citizens of Dubrovnik. Approach

Uvala Janska can be identified by a small white shrine on the S headland of the entrance. From seaward, the prominent belfry in the village of BaniCi farther up the hillside to the E helps locate the inlet. There are no navigational lights at Uvala Janska. Anchor Anchor in the N part of the inlet in 9m. Alternatively anchor and take a line ashore. The bottom is sand and weed. Beware of fishing nets set within the inlet.
