General

42°57'-5N 13°53'.5E Charts BA 200, 220 San Benedetto del Tronto is an attractive holiday resort with tree-lined avenues and shady parks. The main part of the town is on the hill overlooking the harbour, but there are a number of hotels and villas lining the beaches for some distance N and S of the harbour. The Molo Sud has been renamed Strada di Jonathan Livingston and is lined with a series of modern sculptures. The harbour can be congested with fishing boats. This harbour is prone to silting so depths may be less than charted. In particular silting occurs within 60m of the Molo Nord.

Approach

The town and beach resort are conspicuous from seaward. The square belfry surmounted by a pyramid in the town, and the tall white lighthouse tower situated in the S corner of the harbour help with identification. Various oil and gas platforms lie in the vicinity of San Benedetto de! Tronto. If approaching from south note that mussels are cultivated in an area 3YiM southeast of the harbour. The mussel beds are marked by a light beacon (Fl.Y.5s). Beware of rocks lying close inshore approximately 3M south of San Benedetto del Tronto. When entering the harbour give the ends of both breakwaters a good berth, particularly the Molo Sud, because of underwater ballasting.
