Risan

42°30"8N 18°42'E Charts BA 1582, MK 27, lmray M27 Risan is a small quiet town in the most N part of Kotarski Zaljev (Risanski Zaljev). It has a small sheltered harbour. There is a large hotel to the N of the harbour, and a special hospital, but otherwise little development. It is worth visiting Risan to see the Roman mosaics not far from the harbour.
Approach
The large hotel on the N side of the bay is conspicuous. The harbour is near the public gardens. The harbour wall with the metal light structure is not apparent until fairly close to the town.

Berth
Tie up alongside the wall, choosing your berth with care. The wall has not been maintained as well as it might have been. In NE winds, the better berth is on the outside of the wall. It is possible to tie up alongside the quay near the gardens, but there are shallow patches. Anchor Anchor in depths of between 6m and 12m. The bottom is mud.
Shelter
The bora blows strongly at Risan, but does not create any sea. W winds make the outside of the wall uncomfortable. The harbour offers good shelter. The approach to Risan harbour
Facilities
Water is available from taps near the flowerbeds on the quay, but a hose pipe is required (the taps are really intended for watering the flowers!). Fuel is available from the filling station in the town on the road to Perast. Several shops including a supermarket and vinopromet (wine shop). Post Office. Telephones. Pharmacy. Medical centre. Special orthopaedic hospital. Tourist information. Hotel, restaurant, cafe/bar. Bus service.
History
Risan was once an important Illyrian settlement with a mint and a naval base. In 229BC the Romans defeated the Illyrians under Queen Teuta at Risan. The Romans fortified Risan, which became the most important Roman settlement in the Boka Kotorska. In 1930 a Roman villa was discovered at Risan with well-preserved mosaics.
