Rimini

44°04'.6N 12°34'.5E Charts BA 220, 1467 Rimini is a fashionable and popular holiday resort, well known to British tourists. The river port is crowded, and it can be difficult finding a berth. Fortunately, a large marina has been built at Rimini. The marina is entered from inside the entrance channel, beyond the ferry berth.
Approach
The large resort of Rimini is easy to find. As aids to identification a tall skyscraper, a church belfry with a fret-work type concrete spire, and the square white lighthouse tower S of the breakwaters are all conspicuous. The arrival or departure of a ferry can also help locate the entrance. The harbour entrance is protected by a long mole to the E, and a shorter mole to the W. There are lights on the ends of both moles. The marina lies to the W of the W mole. If approaching from N beware of a shallow bank with depths of less than 0.5m, situated 6Yi cables to the W of the harbour entrance and 1 .6 cables offshore. Beware of shallow seas in the approach, and do not attempt to enter or leave in strong onshore winds or big seas. Depths of about 3.5m are normal in the entrance channel, although depths can be less because of silting. Strong currents may sometimes be encountered in the entrance, and, even in good weather, there can be quite a slop between the breakwaters. Beware of ferries, which berth along the outer part of the E breakwater.

Berth
Berth at the marina as directed. Finding a berth in the river port itself can be difficult. The W quay is used by fishing boats and official launches.
Shelter
The inner part of the harbour enjoys all-round shelter, but nearer the entrance winds from N and W create an uncomfortable swell. Rimini occasionally suffers from sudden floods, which can raise the water level to nearly lm above the quayside, and cause very strong currents. The Admiralty Pilot says that six hours' warning is always given of these floods.

Rimini is a big city and has an excellent range of all types of shops, as well as a fish market and a fruit and vegetable market. Post Office, banks, ATMs, telephones. Doctors, dentists, hospital, first aid, pharmacies, veterinary surgeon. Tourist information, hotels, restaurants, cafe/bars, etc. Museum, theatre, cinemas, concerts. Sailing club. Several reputable yards where yachts are built and can be repaired. Slipway and cranes. Engines, electrical/electronic installations and sails can be repaired. History
Rimini was an important Roman town and port at the end of the Via Emilia. Roman remains still visible in Rimini are the Arch of Augustus, the bridge of Tiberius, and an amphitheatre. Other buildings dating from later centuries which are worth seeing are the Arengo Palace and Sismondo Castle from the Middle Ages, and the Tempio Malatestiano with its frescoes which was built by the powerful and evil Malatesta family. The Malatesta family ruled Rimini from the 13th to the 15th century. For children there is the model village, 'Italy in miniature'. Riccione
