Porto Garibaldi
General
44°40'.6N 12°15'E Charts BA 7467, 204 Porto Garibaldi is a river port approximately 9M southwest of the Po delta. For the yachtsman it is really the first useable port of call S of Chioggia. The harbour is being expanded and improved for a 5.1 Italy: Slovenia to Ancona growing fishing fleet, whilst the area to the N of Porto Garibaldi is being developed as a tourist resort. There is a 300-berth marina, Marina degli Estensi, in a sheltered basin at the end of a short canal on the S side of the river port.
Approach
Porto Garibaldi is difficult to identify from seaward because of the generally low-lying land to the N and S. The poor visibility often encountered in the area does not help matters either. The tank and rotunda marked on the chart to the N of Porto Garibaldi are no longer conspicuous. They are masked by new holiday developments. The most distinctive features for locating the entrance to Porto Garibaldi are a skyscraper 6 cables SSW of the entrance (marked on Chart 1467) and a Post Office microwave aerial in the town of Porto Garibaldi. The dish aerial is mounted on a tall latticework tower painted with red and white bands. At night it displays red warning lights. Having identified Porto Garibaldi the breakwaters at the entrance are apparent in the closer approach. There are three parallel breakwaters extending out to sea. The entrance to Porto Garibaldi lies between the two N breakwaters on a course of approximately 255°. Lights are displayed from the heads of these two breakwaters, and a fog signal is sounded from the most N breakwater. The S breakwater is longer than the other two breakwaters and has a light post at its head (F.R). Depths in the entrance can be considerably less than charted, because of silting, so proceed with caution. Depths within the harbour are also irregular, and in certain conditions, drying banks can form. Beware of shallow depths (less than 2m) extending off the beach to N and S of the breakwaters. If approaching from south note that fishing stakes lie up to YiM offshore approximately 3YiM south of Porto Garibaldi. A shellfish farm is located in an area between 2 and 5 miles NE of the entrance, and should be avoided. Considerable seas can be met at the entrance in strong onshore winds and in these conditions no attempt should be made to enter or leave the harbour. Firing range There is a firing range in the area to the S of Porto Garibaldi, which extends as far as Casalborsetti and up to 3YiM out to sea. Shells are fired out to sea and there are unexploded shells on the seabed. Navigation is prohibited in this area. When the range is in operation there is usually a guard boat in attendance, but if you intend passing through this area check with the harbour office in Porto Garibaldi or Porto Corsini first. The exact extent of this prohibited area is best seen from the chart.

Berth
The best berth for a yacht (up to 25m in length) is in the marina, which lies in a separate basin S of the river port. The entrance is via a narrow channel, opposite the main town quay. At night F.R and F.G lights are exhibited at the entrance to the channel. It may also be possible to berth in the basin situated nearest to the road bridge, where there are private and sailing club pontoons.
