Approach
The coast on either side of Porto Malamocco is low with few distinguishing features. The entrance is marked by a fairway beacon located 2M eastsoutheast of the north breakwater. Between this beacon and the head of the breakwaters are two port-hand beacons, and a starboard-hand beacon. All are lit. Having located one of the outer beacons a course of 287.5° passes between the breakwaters and into the lagoon. The N breakwater has a tower on a house, painted black and white, at its head, whilst the S breakwater has a small red tower at its head. Within the entrance on Isola di Malamocco there is a light tower, Rocchetta, (white with a black stripe) which when in line with Spignon tower beyond, leads through the channel on 287°. A port-hand beacon marks the channel within the breakwaters, and a light beacon marks the end of a training wall protruding into the channel from the S inner end of the channel. Tides run strongly through this entrance. They can run at up to 4 knots at springs.
