Approach
The entrance to Porto di Chioggia can be difficult to find, although the holiday development at?ottomarina with its beaches and high-rise buildings JUSt S of the entrance is comparatively conspicuous. There are few buildings N of the entrance. It is necessary to identify the breakwaters before approaching the entrance, since there is no fairway buoy off Porto Chioggia. Do not approach the N breakwater too closely; it has some submerged rocks extending about cable E of its head. Inside the entrance channel (dredged to Sm) there are several patches with depths of about 4m over them. Within the breakwaters are three light beacons marking the edges of the dredged channel. The tide runs strongly through this channel and can make entry difficult. Strong winds from NE, E or SE create a big sea in the entrance and can be dangerous for yachts.

The larger channels have sufficient depths to allow the passage of ships, whilst many of the smaller canals have less than a metre depth at low water (but almost 2m at high tide). The main channels are lit. It is possible to navigate within the Laguna Veneta using Chart 1483 . It is, however, worth purchasing an Italian chart for this area. One chart for the entire lagoon is easily available and inexpensive from local bookshops. When navigating in this area beware of strong tidal currents, which often come from different directions. This change of current direction is particularly important when passing the main outlets to the sea. BERTHING AT VENICE Charts BA 1442, 1483 There are a number of possible berths close to Venice.
