45°13'.6N 13°35'.6E Charts BA 201 (includes plan), MK 2, lmray M24 The town of Poree is built on a small peninsula with the harbour and a marina lying to the south. The harbour area is sheltered from seaward by 0. Sv. Nikola. The town has some attractive old buildings and streets and is popular with tourists. There is plenty to do and see here.
Approach
Many rocks and shoals lie off this coast. The location of these dangers is best seen from the chart. Approaching from S, note in particular Hrid Zontuja and Hrid Regata (described above in the entry for Uvala Mulandarija), and Plieina Bekarija, a rock lying about 5 cables offshore and about 4 cables S of the old light tower on 0. Sv. Nikola. Pl. Bekarija is marked by an unlit beacon with two balls. Beware of Hrid Karbula, a small islet lying about 1 cable NW of the N part of 0. Sv. Nikola, and joined to the island by a shallow rocky bank. Approaching from north beware of Pl. Meja, marked by an unlit beacon with two white balls, nearly lM north-northwest of Hrid Barbaran (on which there is a light). The coast to the N of Poree is shallow, and in one place (off Rt Pica!) a shallow bank extends about 4 cables offshore. Hrid Barbaran, the islet NW of Poree and NNE of the breakwater extending from 0. Sv. Nikola, has a Poree shallow rocky bank surrounding it and should not be approached too closely. At night, the sectored light on Hrid Barbaran guides you from NW or SW past the various dangers into Poree harbour. To enter The harbour can be entered by passing either to the N or SE of 0. Sv. Nikola. The most straightforward entry is made by passing midway between Hrid Barbaran and the N breakwater extending from 0. Sv. Nikola. The channel is well lit and has depths of 11m.The channel into the harbour passing to the SE of 0. Sv. Nikola is not lit and has depths of 3m in it.

Berth
Poree is so popular that during July and August you need to arrive early in the afternoon to be sure of a berth. A berth in the marina may have to be booked in advance. There are three berthing possibilities at Poree. of the marina. Berthing/mooring fees, collected by the harbourmaster, entitle visitors to use the showers at the marina.
Shelter
The shelter is good in the harbour, although strong winds from NW and SW can create an uncomfortable surge in the harbour.
Officials
Year round port of entry. Harbourmaster and customs are located in separate buildings on the N quay near the pier. To complete the formalities tie up alongside the pier, where there is a customs/police post.
Facilities
Water and electricity have been laid on to the town quay W of the customs pier. The marina, which is open throughout the year, has water and electricity to all berths, toilets, showers, exchange facilities, 5ton crane and a workshop. History
The history of Poree is similar to that of many other Istrian towns. There was a Roman settlement here, called Colonia Julia Parentium, which was overrun by the Ostrogoths when the Western Empire collapsed. Later influences and rulers included Byzantium, the Franks, Venetians, Austrians and, during the period between the two world wars, Italians. The city was badly damaged by bombing during the second world war, but has been carefully restored. Poree has a number of interesting old buildings, which bear witness to the town's past. By far the most important is the Christian basilica built by Bishop Euphrasius in the 6th century. It is decorated with some magnificent gold mosaics, which show the influence of Byzantium. They are considered by some art historians to be of greater value than those at Ravenna. Within the precincts of the basilica there is also a 3rd-century mosaic floor. The basilica complex is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Other buildings of interest in the town include several medieval houses and palaces, and the 17thcentury Sineic Palace, which now houses a museum. Poree is a good centre from which to visit Pazin, where there is a well-preserved medieval castle now housing a museum, and Beram, where the ceetery church of Sv.
