Pescara
General
42°28'N 14°13"6E Charts BA 200, 1443 The modern city of Pescara, birthplace of the poet Gabriele D'Annunzio (1863-1938), lies 20M SE of Giulianova. Besides a museum dedicated to D'Annunzio there is also a museum of regional life. The city has extensive sandy beaches and is popular with holidaymakers. Pescara has a busy river port (Porto Canale) used by cargo vessels, ferries and a 5.2 Italy: Numana to Manfredonia fishing fleet. There are berths for yachts in the river port, but a large marina has been built to the east of the river port, and is a better option for visitors.
Approach
No attempt should be made to enter Pescara in strong winds, particularly those from NE. The marina is dangerous to enter in NE winds of force 6 and above. Pescara is easily identified. There is a tall needle like chimney to the S of the marina and a cluster of aerials on the hill to the SE of the city. An isolated breakwater lies 2 cables N of the entrance to the river port. When rounding this breakwater beware of the possibility of encountering a ship or ferry. If intending to go into the Porto Canale note the presence of an unlit buoy just N of the entrance marking a 2m shallow patch (see plan). Do not enter the river until the entrance is well open, and give the heads of the breakwaters a good berth because of underwater ballasting. A strong current of up to 2kns in normal conditions may be encountered when entering the river. Yachts must give priority to any ships entering or leaving the port, and should keep to the right. The yacht berths lie at the far end of the basin, downstream of a road bridge with an air clearance of 5.4m. To enter Marina di Pescara The marina lies SE of the Porto Canale and S of the isolated breakwater. It is entered from SE, passing N of a yellow light buoy lying just off the E breakwater head. Beware of a submerged reef lOOm offshore between the mole to port and Fosso Vallelunga. A shallow bank, with less than lm over it, extends in a SE direction, parallel to the shore, from the short mole to port when entering. Leave the 4 small red buoys (unlit} to port. The marina has depths of 3 to 3.5m, and it is a requirement that yachts drawing 2.5m or above should contact the marina on VHF Ch 06 for directions before entering.

Berth
Berth in the marina as directed. The marina can accommodate yachts up to 50m in length. The best berth in Porto Canale, if space is available, is at the yacht club. If no space is available here tie up alongside the opposite quay near the guardia di finanza launches. Secure with your bow facing upstream.
Shelter
Excellent shelter is available in the Porto Canale near the road bridge. Strong currents however can be a problem, especially as on occasion they can bring trees etc. downstream. The marina enjoys excellent shelter.
Officials
Harbourmaster's office is on the S side of the port, just downstream of the road bridge. Customs. Police.
