Palermos {Panormes)
General
40°03"7N 19°48'E Chart 188 (passage chart) This bay is situated almost 1 lM northwest of Kepi i Qefalit, on which there is a major light (Fl.5sl 4 7m9M). Although Palermos is recognised as a safe haven in bad weather, it is a military base and mooring here is not advised. One yachtsman reports that, having taken refuge from a southwesterly gale alongside an old fish quay behind the castle on the advice of the Ximares port authority, he was forced to leave at gun-point by an Albanian patrol boat.
Approach
A light (Fl.8sl 13m8M) is exhibited from an octagonal tower on the headland at the SE entrance to the bay. Rocks lie on the NW side of this headland. The bay is divided into two sections with a small promontory separating them. Both parts of the bay are deep in the centre.
Berth
Anchor in the N section close to the of the promontory that divides the two parts of the bay. This section is sheltered from all winds except those blowing from the SW. Shelter from SW winds can be found in the other part of the bay. Both bays are deep, and the holding is variable with rocky patches. A line ashore is required to prevent the anchor dragging down the steeply sloping seabed. Gjiri i Spiles {Ximares)
