42°21"N 14°25"E Charts BA 200, 7443 (plan) The town of Ortona on its hill overlooks a spacious artificial harbour, but as the harbour is subject to silting only certain parts of it are available for commercial craft. The N part of the harbour is used by fishing boats, the nautical college vessel, and by small oil tankers. The shallower S part of the harbour is used by yachts. A marina is in the process of being developed in the SW corner of the harbour. At present it is only open during the summer months.

Approach

Ortona, with its cupola, belfry and ruined castle up on the hill overlooking the harbour, is . easily recognised. The lighthouse to the NW of the harbour is painted with black and white bands and shows up well, especially when approaching from N.

Shelter

The harbour is sheltered from all directions except E. Strong E gales can create dangerous conditions in the harbour.

Harbourmaster's and customs offices on the NW side of the harbour near the fish market. Police in the town.

Facilities

Water and electricity have been laid onto the marina pontoons and the yacht quay. The marina has toilets and showers. No fuel berth for yachts. The nearest fuel is from one of the filling stations up in the town. Italian gas and Camping Gaz in the town. Down at the harbour there are a few bars, a restaurant and fish market. There is a Post Office on the road leading up to the town. The railway station is near the harbour, and there is a bus service from the station to the town. The town is at the top of the hill and it is a long hot hike. There is an excellent range of shops in Ortona, including supermarkets, grocery stores, bakers, butchers, greengrocers, etc. Hardware shops. Banks, ATMs, telephones, Post Office. Medical facilities including a hospital. Taxis, car hire. Ferry to Dubrovnik. The yard on the W side of the harbour builds steel yachts. It has a slipway, 300-ton travel hoist and crane. Mechanical, electrical/electronic and sail repairs are possible.
