Opatija (and lciCi)

Some are modern buildings, but the majority along the sea front were built in the opulent and grandiose style fashionable at the end of the 19th century. Opatija has a small harbour full of locallyowned yachts and boats, an exposed quay near the fuel berth, and two marinas. Marina Admiral, on the S edge of Opatija, is attached to the Hotel Admiral. Another marina, which is part of the ACI chain and is called Marina Opatija, has been built at ICiCi. IciCi, which lies between Opatija to the NE and Ika to the S, also has a small harbour, crowded with locally-owned boats. There is no room for a visiting yacht in IciCi harbour. The best berth for a visiting yacht is in one of the marinas, where the yacht can be left in safety whilst the crew visit Rijeka or go sightseeing.
Approach
There are no dangers in the approaches. Marina Admiral can be recognised from seaward by the white terraced hotel with its name, Hotel Admiral, written boldly on the top storey. In the nearer approach the breakwater (faced with stone ballasting to seaward) and the light structure on the N end are conspicuous. When entering the marina note that there is a roped off swimming area near the entrance. There are rocks close inshore in the bay to the N. The fuel quay and the old harbour lie on the N and E sides of the small promontory approximately 8 cables farther N. There is a light on the end of the harbour breakwater. ACI Marina Opatija lies at ICiCi 8 cables to the S of Marina Admiral. The rubble breakwater with its light pillar, yacht masts and the ACI flag aid positive identification.
