Mola di Bari
General
41°03'.6N 17°05'.9E Charts BA 786 The town of Mola di Bari has its medieval quarter like so many of the towns along this coast. The harbour, situated 1 lM east-southeast of Bari, is mainly used by fishing boats. There is a small shallow boat harbour (unsuitable for yachts) to the NW of the main harbour. Entry to the harbour is restricted between the hours of 2000 and 0700 to authorised vessels only.
Approach
Mola di Bari can be recognised by the church standing on the shore to the SE of the harbour. This church has a distinctive onion-shaped roof on its tower. A new breakwater, the Molo di Levante, has been built to the E of the harbour entrance. The end of this is marked by a light (Fl.R.3s5M). There are no dangers in the approach to Mola di Bari. Inside the entrance, however, between the Molo Foraneo (with the Fl.G light) and the Braccio di Levante, to the SW, there is a bank with depths of 1.5m which is aligned N-S. To avoid this shallow bank keep close to the Molo Foraneo (avoiding the underwater ballasting). Ballasting extends off the heads of the mole and the breakwaters. Molo di Levante Fl.R.3s8M Molo Foraneo (N breakwater) Fl.G.3s13m7M Braccio di Levante 2F.R(vert) The small-boat harbour to the NW of the main harbour has F.R and F.G lights.
Berth
Secure bow/stern-to the Molo Foraneo in the position shown on the plan, space permitting. The inner part of this breakwater is used by the fishing boats. Alternatively, berth at the sailing club pontoons if space is available. The pontoons have laid lines, and depths of 2.2m. It is also possible to anchor to the W of the Molo di Levante in 3-4m.
Shelter
Shelter is good from all directions except SE, although the new breakwater has improved the situation. Strong easterlies send a surge into the harbour.
Officials
Harbourmaster's office is located at the root of the N breakwater. Police.
