There is a mole tucked in the cove close N of the castle, but approaching this mole or tying up at it are prohibited (see the section on Marine Reserves at the beginning of this chapter). If you wish to visit the castle it is best to leave your yacht at either Grignano or Trieste. The castle was built between 1855 and 1860 as a home for the Archduke Maximillian, the brother of the emperor Franz-Joseph. In 1864 Archduke Maximillian was invited to become emperor of Mexico. His short reign came to a tragic end. Miramare castle and its grounds are open to the public throughout the year. There is a bus every half hour from Trieste to Miramare (No. 36 from Piazza Guglielmo Oberdan). Grignano
