41°23'.3N 16°08'E Charts BA 1443, 186 Margherita di Savoia, called Salina di Barletta until 1879, was renamed in honour of the first queen of the new Kingdom of Italy. It is a long narrow town situated on a ribbon of land between the sea and the extensive saltpans. Salt has been produced here since the 3rd century BC and today Margherita di Savoia is one of the most important salt-producing areas in Europe. The small canal port at Margherita di Savoia is mainly used by fishing boats. It has been improved by the construction of 2 breakwaters which protect the harbour entrance and enclose an area where depths range from 4 to 2m. The harbour is dangerous to approach or enter in strong winds with any N in them.
