At the beginning of the 20th century the poet Rainer Maria Rilke lived in the newer castle, where he wrote his Duineser Elegien. The harbour at Duino is small and attractive, and is run by the local sailing club.

Approach

The castles at Duino, in particular the new castle, help identify the harbour. The harbour lies to the NW of the newer castle. The approaches to Duino are shallow, with depths of between 5 and 7m for some distance offshore. There are many shell-fishing floats to seaward of the harbour. When nearing the harbour pass to the N of the unlit buoy, which marks the end of ballasting extending 20m underwater from the harbour breakwater.

Berth

Tie up alongside the inner side of the breakwater as space allows. Depths on the E side of the harbour are shallow. Anchor In 4m just N of the harbour entrance.

Shelter

The bora blows particularly violently in the village of Duino but the harbour itself is sheltered in a bora. Strong SW winds send a dangerous swell into the harbour.
