Plaza Vira Beach - Donja Vala, Drvenik, Croatia
Plaza Vira Beach lies along the rugged coastline of Drvenik, a peninsula in the Makarska Riviera region of Croatia. This multi-cove beach stretches 240 meters along a shoreline characterized by beige pebbles and a seabed of large boulders. Surrounded by mountainous terrain, the beach offers a stark contrast to the more developed coastal areas of the region. While lacking formal amenities, its natural setting and accessibility make it a destination for those seeking a more secluded experience.
Beach character
The beach's defining feature is its composition of beige pebbles, which cover most of the shoreline. The seabed is marked by large boulders, creating a challenging but rewarding environment for snorkelers. Depth increases gradually, with no sharp drops, making it a relatively safe option for swimmers. The beach's mountainous backdrop provides a dramatic setting, though the lack of sand and limited shade means visitors should prepare accordingly. Notably, the beach is designated as naturist-friendly and allows pets, with specific signage directing users to designated areas.
Swimming and shore
Swimming conditions at Plaza Vira are influenced by the boulder-strewn seabed. While the water is described as "perfect" in some reviews, the rocky terrain may pose challenges for young children or those unaccustomed to such environments. Snorkeling is explicitly listed as an available activity, though no rental equipment or guided tours are mentioned in the catalog. The moderate depth increase and absence of sharp drops make it a viable option for experienced swimmers, though caution is advised near the boulders.
Facilities and activities
No formal amenities are listed for Plaza Vira Beach. Visitor reviews mention the absence of showers, toilets, or sunbed rentals on-site. The only infrastructure noted is a small car park above the beach, though access to this area is subject to parking regulations. The primary activity available is snorkeling, with no other recreational facilities explicitly mentioned. The beach's natural state means visitors should bring their own equipment and supplies.
Access and location
Access to Plaza Vira Beach is via a short path from a road near the village of Donja Vala. Reviews describe the route as passing through olive groves, with the beach located at the base of a hillside. Parking is available in a small lot above the beach, though recent visitors have reported encountering "No stopping" signs and associated fines. The beach is approximately 10 kilometers from the town of Makarska, placing it within the broader Makarska Riviera tourism corridor but at a distance from major coastal infrastructure.
What visitors say
Visitor reviews highlight both the beach's natural beauty and logistical challenges. Positive feedback emphasizes the "desertic cove" atmosphere, clean waters, and scenic mountain views. One reviewer described it as "a fantastic" find during the pandemic, while another praised the "beautiful pebbles beach" and "clean" conditions. Negative experiences primarily concern parking enforcement, with one visitor reporting a β¬60 fine for stopping in the designated car park. The beach's appeal is tempered by the need for visitors to navigate these access restrictions.
Practical tips
Visitors should bring water shoes to navigate the pebble shoreline and consider arriving early to secure shaded spots. Parking regulations are strictly enforced, so visitors should plan to arrive before the beach becomes crowded. Given the absence of on-site facilities, bringing personal supplies for shade, hydration, and waste disposal is recommended. The beach's natural state makes it ideal for those seeking an unspoiled coastal experience.
Exploring the coast by yacht
Plaza Vira's location in the Makarska Riviera places it within a region known for its yacht charter activity. While the beach itself is not a formal anchorage, the nearby Drvenik Peninsula offers several marinas and harbors that cater to motor yachts and sailing boats. Charter guests exploring the area may consider combining a visit to Plaza Vira with stops at nearby anchorages such as those in Supetar or Bol. The beach's proximity to the main road makes it accessible for day-trippers from coastal marinas, though its pebble shoreline may require careful navigation for smaller vessels.
Seasonal Considerations
The beach's crowd index is described as "Moderate" during high season, suggesting it avoids the extreme congestion of more popular destinations. However, the lack of formal amenities means capacity is limited by natural conditions rather than infrastructure. Reviews from 2021 and 2024 indicate consistent appeal, though visitors should be prepared for variable conditions depending on the time of year.

Reviews
Beware of parking tickets in the car park above the beach. Despite it being off the road, and there even having a toilet and litter bin in the car park, there's a new 'No stopping' sign before the car park which it seems applies. β¬60 cost for an otherwise amazing beach π‘
A fantastic desertic cove. Parking is right on the Road, close to a turn. With a short way down among olive trees you reach this beautiful peebles beach. No services, safe for a sunbed renting. Beach Is clean and you can find some shady spot, if you get there early in the morning
Beacause of the covid 19 we searched for less crowded beaches in Makarska riviera and we found this beach. It is a pebble beach, meke sure you bring your water shoes. The water is perfect, the beach is clean, there are about 10 parking lots above the beach, beside the main road.
While walking mostly by the sea starting from Zivogosce to the Gradac before summer we were able to enjoy beautiful nature without too much people (and heat fortunately). Split-Dalmatia
