Petarcica Beach - Zavala, Croatia
Beach character
The beach's defining feature is its cove shape, enclosed by low cliffs that create a sheltered environment. The shoreline consists of small beige pebbles, offering a contrast to the clear, calm waters of the Adriatic. Depth increases gradually from the shore, making it suitable for families with children. Natural shade from the surrounding cliffs provides relief during the hottest parts of the day. The beach's size and location make it feel more like a hidden enclave than a typical tourist destination.Swimming and shore
Swimming conditions are generally favorable, with water clarity reported as excellent in visitor accounts. The moderate depth increase allows for safe entry into the sea, though the pebbled shore may require caution for barefoot swimmers. The beach's orientation and sheltered position create relatively calm waters, though wave activity can vary with wind direction. Snorkeling and diving are possible in the shallows, where the seabed transitions from pebbles to sandy patches.Facilities and activities
There are no formal amenities listed for Petarcica Beach itself, but the nearby settlement of Zavala offers camping facilities that extend to the beach area. The beach is associated with four primary water-based activities: windsurfing, kayaking, surfing, and snorkeling. These opportunities align with the beach's exposure to coastal winds and its proximity to open waters. The equipped camping area suggests that overnight stays are possible, though visitors should confirm availability through local operators.Access and location
Located at Zavala 188 ground floor, the beach is accessible via a narrow road that connects to the main routes through Zavala. Limited parking spaces are available along the road, with one reviewer noting potential challenges during peak season. A unique approach to the beach comes via the Pitve Tunnel, which links to the nearby village of Jelsa. This route may be particularly appealing to visitors staying in Jelsa, offering an alternative to the main road access. What visitors say
Reviewers consistently praise Petarcica Beach for its natural beauty and tranquility. One visitor described it as 'the best place on island Hvar,' while another highlighted the 'lovely clean beach with small smooth pebbles.' Multiple reviewers noted the beach's suitability for families, particularly due to the gentle slope into calm waters. However, several mentioned the narrow road access and limited parking as potential drawbacks, especially during high season. One reviewer specifically recommended visiting in late season for a more relaxed experience.Practical tips
Visitors should plan for limited parking availability, particularly during peak months. The narrow road access may require careful navigation. Those arriving from Jelsa may find the Pitve Tunnel route an interesting alternative. The beach's pebbled shore suggests bringing water shoes for comfort. Reviews
The best place on island Hvar.
Visited in mid June. Lovely clean beach with small smooth pebbles. Narrow road access and limited parking and turning. Can imagine it is tricky get to in high season. Gentle slope in to the calm water which is clear and ideal for children. Interesting approach via Pitve Tunnel. A worthwhile excursion for an afternoon while staying in Jelsa.
Lovely beach if visiting in late season.
