Otok Sipan II Beach, Croatia
Beach character
The beach is a narrow cove, 10 meters wide at its widest point, with a gently sloping seabed composed of small beige pebbles. The water depth increases moderately, creating a safe environment for swimmers. The shoreline is flanked by low-lying hills, offering natural shade during peak hours. Unlike sandy beaches, the pebble surface provides a firm footing, though visitors should be mindful of potential sea urchins beyond the marked swimming zones. The beach’s compact size and sheltered position make it ideal for those seeking a relaxed, less crowded alternative to larger coastal resorts.Swimming and shore
Swimming conditions are generally calm, with clear waters that reveal a vibrant marine ecosystem. The beach’s shallow gradient allows easy entry into the sea, though the pebble substrate may require careful steps. Snorkeling is a popular activity, with visibility often exceeding 15 meters. Kayaking and water-based entertainment options are available nearby, though direct beachfront rentals are not listed in the catalog. The absence of artificial structures or lifeguard services means visitors should exercise caution, particularly when exploring beyond the designated swimming areas.Facilities and activities
The beach itself lacks formal amenities such as showers, restrooms, or umbrellas. However, the nearby village of Šipan offers small shops, cafes, and accommodations, including the noted 'Green Captain' store for local olive oil. Activities include kayaking, snorkeling, and water sports organized through local operators. The island’s bike-friendly paths allow easy exploration of its olive groves, which hold a Guinness World Record for olive tree density. No structured facilities for children’s play or shaded seating are explicitly mentioned in the catalog.Access and location
Otok Sipan II Beach is located on Šipan Island, part of the Elaphiti Islands group off Croatia’s Dalmatian coast. The nearest major port is Dubrovnik, with ferry services and private yacht charters providing access. The beach’s coordinates (42.68628, 17.93928) place it within a sailing radius of 15-20 nautical miles from Dubrovnik’s harbor. The island’s road network is limited, but bike rentals are available for exploring the coastal trails and olive groves. What visitors say
Visitors consistently highlight the beach’s unique character. One reviewer noted, 'The pebbles are smooth and comfortable underfoot, and the water feels almost spa-like in its clarity.' Another described the island as 'a peaceful escape from city life, with food that was truly delicious.' A recurring theme in reviews is the island’s authenticity, with one visitor humorously remarking, 'Somewhere on the island is a dyslexic that thinks they’re on holiday in Spain.' Reviews
Šipan is a delightful getaway and easily my favourite of the Elaphiti Islands. The main harbour is dotted with small shops, and I recommend stopping by the Green Captain store for some cold-pressed olive oil. The beaches are mostly pebble rather than sand, yet the stones are smooth and comfortable underfoot. The water is so clear and calm that it feels almost spa-like. I did spot a few sea urchins farther out, but they were thankfully absent from the marked swimming areas! Fun fact: Šipan holds a Guinness World Record for the highest density of olive trees per square metre, which is a very impressive claim that you’ll appreciate as you wander through its silvery groves. If you’re staying in Dubrovnik and want a peaceful day trip with good swimming, authentic local produce, and a touch of island charm, Šipan is well worth the boat ride.
If you’re looking for something unique, away from the city noise and rush, this place is absolutely worth a visit. The atmosphere is peaceful, the surroundings are charming, and the experience offers a much-needed break from everyday life. The island is easy to explore by bike, making it perfect for a day trip or a longer stay. There are a few places to eat and stay overnight and and the food was truly delicious. You won’t find nightclubs here – but you will leave with a richer, more authentic experience.
