Old Povljana Beach, Croatia
Old Povljana Beach lies along the Adriatic coast near Zadar, Croatia, offering a 1.2km stretch of cove beach with beige sand and pebbles. Its shallow, smooth-gradient seabed makes it a popular spot for leisure seekers, though visitor reviews note varying experiences with water access and crowd levels.
Beach character
The beach's natural features include a gently sloping seabed of sand and pebbles, with a depth increase that transitions smoothly from shallow waters near the shore to deeper areas further out. The beach itself is a mix of beige sand and pebbles, spanning 30 meters in width. While the catalog notes a 'moderate' cleanliness index, visitor reports frequently highlight the beach's overall tidiness, though one reviewer mentioned 'little bit grassy' areas near the shore.
Swimming and shore
Swimming conditions are generally family-friendly, with the first 50 meters of water shallow enough for wading. However, several reviewers emphasized that deeper swimming requires walking further from the shore, with one noting the need to 'go very far to swim.' The water temperature is consistently warmer than adjacent areas, according to visitor accounts. The beach's sheltered cove position provides some protection from open-sea swells, though wave activity may vary with wind direction.
Facilities and activities
No structured amenities are listed in the beach catalog, but visitor experiences suggest the area is largely undeveloped. The absence of formal facilities aligns with the beach's 'remote place' description from one reviewer. Activities appear limited to sunbathing, casual swimming, and overnight stays, with one visitor noting the beach's suitability for 'staying overnight.'
Access and location
Located at Ul. Augusta Šenoe 5, Povljana (coordinates 44.32924, 15.13192), the beach is accessible via road networks connecting to Zadar and the broader Dalmatian coast. Its proximity to Zadar (mentioned in one review) suggests potential for combining beach visits with cultural attractions in the region. The beach's position within a cove may require careful navigation for those arriving by watercraft.
What visitors say
Reviewers consistently describe Old Povljana Beach as clean and family-friendly, with one calling it 'perfect if you like real nature' and another noting it's 'ideal for small children.' However, experiences vary regarding accessibility: while some praise the warm water and shallow depths, others highlight the need to walk considerable distances to reach deeper swimming areas. Crowding is reported as 'busy' in high season, though the beach's remote character is frequently noted in reviews.
Practical tips
Visitors are advised to bring beach essentials like pails and shovels, as one reviewer noted their usefulness. Given the beach's remote nature, consider arriving early to secure preferred spots. The warm water temperature may appeal to those seeking thermal comfort, though the need to walk for deeper swimming should be factored into plans.
Exploring the coast by yacht
Situated along Croatia's Dalmatian Coast, Old Povljana Beach lies within a sailing region known for its sheltered bays and historic ports. While the beach itself is not a formal anchorage, the nearby Zadar area offers yacht charter opportunities through Euro-Agent, with motor yachts and sailboats available for exploring the Adriatic. The beach's proximity to Zadar's maritime infrastructure may make it a convenient stop for sailors navigating the region.
Seasonal Considerations
The beach's 'moderate' cleanliness index suggests seasonal variations in maintenance. High-season crowds (noted as 'busy') may affect comfort levels, though the beach's natural character remains a consistent feature. Winter visits are unlikely due to the lack of structured amenities and the shallow water depth.

Reviews
Beautiful sandy beach, first 50m shallow to the knees, little bit grassy..
Very nice and remote place. The beach is clean, mostly sandy. Ideal place for small children and their parents because the water is not deep. For some it might be the disadvantage - you have to go very far to swim. From other hand the water is warmer than in other places. Good for stay overnight.
This beach is perfect if you like real nature and there is not many people.
A hidden sand beach in a relaxing environment. Perfect for families with children. Don't forget the pail and shovel at home. Zadar
