Kastanija Beach - Novigrad Istria, Croatia
Kastanija Beach, located in Novigrad Istria on Croatia's Adriatic coast, is a cove beach stretching 390 meters with a width of 10 meters. Its unique geography creates a sheltered environment with beige sand and pebble mixtures, making it a popular spot for water sports and naturists. The beach's proximity to Novigrad, a town known for its medieval architecture and Istrian cuisine, adds cultural depth to the coastal experience.
Beach character
The beach's natural features include a mixed seabed of sand and boulders, with moderate depth increase that supports both shallow-water activities and slightly deeper exploration. The predominant surface consists of black sand with pebbles, though some areas feature beige sand. The cove's shape provides natural protection from direct wave action, though water clarity varies with seasonal conditions. Visitor reports note that water shoes are recommended due to the rocky terrain.
Swimming and shore
Swimming conditions are generally favorable, with visitors describing 'clear and hot water during summer' in reviews. The beach supports a range of water activities including stand-up paddleboarding (SUP), surfing, snorkeling, and jetskiing. While snorkeling visibility is occasionally limited by murky waters—a common trait along the Umag coast—the beach remains a hub for active water sports. The moderate depth increase allows for both shallow and deeper swimming, though caution is advised near the rocky seabed.
Facilities and activities
Facilities are minimal but include visitor-reported amenities such as parking (5 kuna/hour, card/app only), shaded areas under pine trees, and a nearby restaurant. Showers are available but have experienced intermittent issues with water supply. The beach is dog-friendly with designated areas, and naturism is permitted. No formal toilets or changing facilities are listed in the catalog, though visitors have accessed nearby town amenities.

Public transportation options include buses connecting to Rovinj and Pula.
What visitors say
Visitors describe Kastanija as 'a beautiful, quiet beach' with 'natural shade provided by pine trees,' though high season crowds can make the beach 'busy.' Reviews highlight clean water and sand, with one visitor noting 'no dogs allowed' despite the beach's pet-friendly policy. Parking fees and non-functional showers have been reported, but overall experiences are positive. The beach is particularly recommended for families, active travelers, and naturists seeking a relaxed coastal environment.
Practical tips
Essential tips: Bring water shoes for rocky areas, check shower availability in advance, and plan for parking costs. Arrive early in high season to secure shaded spots. Note that while the beach is dog-friendly, some areas may have restrictions. Snorkeling visibility may be limited due to regional water clarity conditions.
Exploring the coast by yacht
For yacht charter guests, Kastanija Beach offers a convenient stop along Istria's sailing routes. The nearby marinas in Novigrad and Umag provide docking options, with sailing distances to Rovinj (25 nautical miles) and Pula (40 nautical miles). Cultural Context of Novigrad Istria
Novigrad, the nearest town, is renowned for its well-preserved medieval architecture, including the 13th-century fortress and the Church of St. Nicholas. The region is a hub for Istrian gastronomy, with local specialties like truffle-infused dishes and white wine from the surrounding vineyards. The beach's location near the Istrian coast's sailing routes makes it a strategic point for exploring the peninsula's cultural and natural attractions.
Seasonal Considerations
Peak season (July-August) brings higher crowds and busier conditions, though the beach remains family-friendly. Shade bellow the trees. Shower option
Clean beach and water. Not too crowded at least when we were there. No dogs allowed. Some shadow spots next to trees available. Parking is 5 kuna per hour, payable with card or app, no coins. We had a good time.
Parking directly on site 5kn/hour. Showers not working due to water shortage. Very clean water and places on the lawn, sand or stone are available. A litte restaurant is also available.
Nice, not crowdy place with clear and hot water during summer.
A beautiful, quiet beach, with natural shade provided by the pine trees. Water shoes are needed. Snorkeling isn't optimal, but that is the case all along the Umag coast, as the water is a bit murky. Istria
